Diversity and Inclusion
The dictionary defines intersectionality as “the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage.”
What does this mean? And how does it apply to the workplace?
Diversity and inclusion efforts tend to focus on ensuring representation from various groups of different demographics – gender identity, sexual orientation, race, for example. At Sutherland Partnership, we work with companies to improve diversity and inclusion via intersectionality, a workplace technique becoming an HR best practice.
Sutherland Partnership uses its experiences in the U.S. military as the basis of its approach. People join the military from many different entry points, and those experiences are considered as a whole, rather than individually. As military leaders, we then work to ensure that all factors that may be considered “different” (which really just make us unique as individuals) are recognized. We seek various viewpoints to contribute to decisions. And, as we have done and currently do in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other countries around the world, we show up, listen, and learn about the communities within which we serve.
Diversity and inclusion is not one-size-fits-all nor does it fit neatly into discrete boxes. Sutherland Partnership will work with you to break down the complexities of your workplace in order to find common ground and connections that enhance creativity, problem-solving, and productivity.
